Year 6 Transition Workshops

Little Star Writing Transition Workshop are designed specifically for year 6 students to help them with the leap from primary to secondary school. These worshops provide a basic overview of the kind of work you would expect at secondary school, with a focus on introducing students to the art of annotating, drafting, planning, and essay writing.

We give the students some simple rules to follow, introduce them to self-evaluation, teach them using a variety of activities, games and group work, and show them that Key Stage 3 writing doesn't have to be difficult or boring.  In fact, it can be a simple, creative process - like writing a story.

These three-hour intensive workshops provide students with the key skills and knowledge to start year seven with confidence. Spaces are extremely limited, and the cost includes a three-hour workshop (and two breaks), all writing equipment, worksheets for annotating, drafting and planning, practise essay questions, and copies of extracts from R.J Palacio's 'Wonder' and John Boyne's 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'.

A big thank you for the Transition Workshop you ran on Sunday. Catherine had a bounce in her step as we left and chattered away eagerly, explaining everything she’d learned that day. Now I just need it to stay in her head!

I have learnt a lot from this workshop and I think it will definitely help me in the future. It shows you can make writing fun.

The Transition Workshop was fabulous! James came home able to explain PEE, annotation and the importance of research. He found the essay map (which he annotated!) the most useful. Thanks again - would definitely consider sending James for a second session and would highly recommend it to anyone with a child about to start secondary school.

I thought today’s workshop was really great! I learnt a lot about writing essays and I also had fun. The teachers were really nice and I learnt about Point, Explain, Example. I thought I already knew about spider maps, annotating and story maps but now I know a lot more
